This morning as I woke up and scrolled through my Facebook feed (because everyone knows that’s the best way to start your day), I noticed a few desperate posts from mothers threatening to take all the gifts back and claim that Santa didn’t come because her children had been too naughty. I’m sure we’ve all heard people says these threats hundreds of times. And I totally get it. My kids can be monsters sometimes. Especially during this crazy time of year when their schedules and routines have disappeared, there are late nights, no naps, and more excitement than even my adult mind can handle. But the thought struck me this morning that I am so thankful beyond words that God is nothing like Santa Claus.
For God saw me in the midst of my darkest sin and still chose Christmas.
God noticed my ungratefulness, my tantrums, my fighting, and the times when I choose hate instead of love and He still gave the Gift.
God felt my shame, my anger, and my doubts toward Him, and yet He never wavered in His decision to Love me anyway.
You see, God and Santa Claus don’t have much in common at all. There were no threats with God, only love. There is no shame with God, only grace. There is no punishment with God, simply mercy. There is no condemnation with God, only the greatest Gift we will ever need.
“Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” – Luke 2:10-11
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” John 3:16-17
May the love of Christ Jesus and the peace of our Savior fill your hearts and homes this Christmas.
Merry Christmas!
